Introduction

The winter expedition to Spiti valley typically runs from November to March, encompassing the core winter months when the region is enveloped in snow, making accessibility and travel adventurous and rewarding. Travelers can experience the tranquil beauty of arctic landscapes, local hospitality in cozy homestays, and the unique cultural festivities like Losar, the Tibetan New Year.

Program Highlights

The expedition includes visits to iconic places such as the monasteries of Tabo and Kunzum La, the last motorable village of Mudh in Pin Valley, . Activities range from snow trekking, wildlife spotting—like the elusive snow leopard—and exploring remote villages, caves, and natural ice skating rinks. The journey also involves adventurous driving on snow and ice, emphasizing skill development in extreme conditions.

Cultural and Natural Attractions

Participants will witness the stark, surreal beauty of snow-covered mountains, frozen waterfalls, and the high-altitude desert flora and fauna, including rare plant species and migratory birds. The region’s monasteries and villages offer a peek into Tibetan-influenced local culture, with traditional meals and seasonal festivals providing cultural insight and warmth.

Challenges and Preparation

The expedition demands meticulous preparation for extreme cold, high altitude, and remote terrain. Packing thermal clothing, heat packs, and high-quality gear is essential to ensure safety and comfort during this demanding yet rewarding experience.

In the evening, settle into a cozy mountain guesthouse, enjoying a warm meal and a briefing for the upcoming journey.

Day 2

Drive Sangla to Tabo via Nako and Chitkul (Enter Kinnaur and Touch the Edge of Spiti) 7 to 8 hours

Drive deeper into Kinnaur, tracing the frozen Sutlej and witnessing the confluence at Khab, where the Spiti River joins its mighty cousin. Visit the fairytale hamlet of Chitkul, then cross high-altitude passes to reach Nako—ancient and peaceful, with its frozen lake and centuries-old monastery. The road leads you further to Tabo, famed for its monastery adorned with timeless murals and known as the “Ajanta of the Himalayas”.

Day 3

Drive from Tabo to kaza via Mud & Kungri  (Monasteries, Pin Valley & Kaza ) 7 to 8 hours

From Tabo, journey into Pin Valley National Park, a wonderland of frosted slopes and frozen rivers. Explore Kungri Monastery and visit Mudh, the last motorable village in the valley, tucked beneath dramatic peaks. Arriving in Kaza—the winter capital of Spiti—you’ll find a rare blend of tranquility and adventure, with time to explore the marketplace and soak in the local spirit.

Day 4

Drive from Kaza  to Sightseeing and back kaza (Villages of the Sky – Langza, Hikkim, Komic)

Ascend to the ethereal villages that sit in the embrace of the Greater Himalayas. Witness the fossil-rich fields of Langza, send postcards from the world’s highest post office in Hikkim, and stand amid the vibrant vistas of Komic, the planet’s highest motorable village. Capture panoramic views, ancient monasteries, and interact with warm-hearted villagers who thrive in this extreme environment.

Day 5

Visit Kibber, known for its unique wildlife and stone houses, and cross the soaring Chicham Bridge—the highest suspension bridge in Asia. Embark on a short trek through snowy trails to mysterious ancient caves painted with folk art, stories of bygone eras echoing in the hush of the mountains. Return to Kaza for a hearty meal and fireside tales.
