Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Drive from Rishikesh(350 to 409 mts) to Ghes ( 2347 mts) 254 km ( 9 to 10 hours )

The journey begins before dawn in Rishikesh, crossing the iconic Ram Jhula as temple bells echo in the morning mist. The drive follows the Alaknanda River upstream, passing through Devprayag where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers merge to form the Ganga. The landscape transforms dramatically as you leave the main pilgrimage route at Rudraprayag, ascending into the lesser-known Khirsu region. The final approach to Ghes winds through apple orchards and pine forests, with the evening light casting long shadows across the Himalayan foothills. Upon arrival in Ghes, you'll be welcomed at a traditional Garhwali homestay where the family shares stories of their ancestral connection to these mountains. The evening concludes with a demonstration of local wool weaving techniques and a dinner featuring ingredients harvested from the family's terraced fields, the air growing noticeably cooler as mountain darkness descends.

Day 2

Ghes (2347 mts) To Dayalkheti (2865 mts) 5 to 6 km ( 4 to hours )

Morning in Ghes begins with the sound of temple bells and grazing livestock, followed by breakfast. The trek starts with a gentle climb through mixed forests of oak and rhododendron, following trails used by villagers collecting firewood and medicinal plants. Your local guide points out animal tracks – perhaps of the Himalayan black bear or ghoral that frequent these slopes – and identifies birds like the striking Himalayan monal. The trail offers regular glimpses of the snow-capped Bandarpoonch range through clearings in the canopy. After approximately two hours, you'll reach a natural spring where locals believe the water has healing properties – the perfect spot for a tea break. The final approach to Dayalkhet reveals a traditional mountain village seemingly suspended in time, with stone houses built using centuries-old architectural techniques. You'll stay in a village home where the evening includes learning about the unique agricultural practices of these high-altitude farms and helping prepare dinner using traditional methods.

Day 3

Dayalkhet (2865 mts) To Bagji Bugyal Basecamp (3261 mts) 2 to 3 km ( 2 hours)

Today's shorter trek allows for a leisurely morning in Dayalkhet, perhaps joining villagers in their morning chores or visiting the local temple dedicated to the mountain deity Nag Raja. The trail to Bagji Bugyal Basecamp climbs steadily through forests that gradually transition from oak to silver fir and birch. The air grows noticeably thinner and cooler as you approach 3,000 meters, with the vegetation changing to stunted rhododendron bushes. Upon reaching the basecamp in a sheltered meadow, you'll have ample time to acclimatize and explore the surrounding area. The afternoon might include a short walk to a nearby ridge for your first panoramic view of the main Bagji Bugyal meadows, with your guide explaining the unique ecology of these high-altitude grasslands. As evening falls, the stories focus on local legends about the bugyal (meadow) spirits and the traditional practices that have preserved these fragile ecosystems for generations.

Day 4

Bagji Bugyal Basecamp (3261 mts) To Dhulamb (2987 mts) Via Bagji Bugyal Top (3353 mts) 6 km ( 4 to 5 hours)

This pivotal day begins before dawn with a light breakfast, then an ascent to Bagji Bugyal Top as the first sunlight touches the high peaks. The morning light transforms the vast meadow into a golden carpet, with wildflowers creating colorful patterns depending on the season – blue poppies and primulas in spring, purple gentians and yellow potentillas in summer. From the summit at 3,353 meters, the 360-degree panorama includes the Bandarpoonch, Swargarohini, and Gangotri ranges stretching to the horizon. You'll spend substantial time absorbing this magnificent vista before beginning the descent to Dhulamb through a different valley. The trail follows a crystal-clear mountain stream, with lunch beside a waterfall whose waters eventually join the Yamuna River. The final approach to Dhulamb reveals why this campsite has been used by shepherds for centuries – a perfectly sheltered location with fresh water and panoramic views. The evening is spent reflecting on the day's spectacular scenery.

Day 5

Dhulamb (2987 mts) To Himni (2438 mts) 4 km ( 3 to 4 hours)

The final trekking day begins with a leisurely breakfast, followed by a gradual descent through forests that grow increasingly dense as you lose altitude. The trail follows an ancient trade route that once connected mountain communities with the plains, passing through stands of ancient deodar trees considered sacred by local villagers. At a strategic viewpoint approximately halfway, you'll enjoy a final panoramic look at the high meadows you've traversed. The arrival in Himni brings you to a traditional Garhwali village where you'll experience the remarkable contrast between the high alpine environment and the cultivated mountain settlements. The afternoon might include visiting the village temple or learning about the unique water management systems that have sustained these communities for generations. Your final mountain evening includes a celebration dinner with local families, perhaps featuring a demonstration of traditional Garhwali folk songs and dances that tell stories of mountain life.

Day 6

Himni (2438 mts) To Rishikesh (350 to 409 mts) 259 km ( 9 to 10 hours)

The journey home begins after a final mountain breakfast, with farewells to the families who have hosted you. The return drive follows a different route through Pauri, offering new perspectives on the Himalayan foothills. A lunch stop at a riverside location near Devprayag provides an opportunity for final reflections while watching the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi. The gradual transition from the cool mountain air to the warmer climate of the plains becomes noticeable as you approach Rishikesh. Arrival in the early evening allows for a visit to the Ganga Aarti ceremony at Triveni Ghat if desired, creating a perfect spiritual conclusion to your mountain journey. You carry home not just photographs of spectacular landscapes, but the memory of having walked through living communities where ancient traditions continue to thrive in the shadow of the eternal Himalayas.
