Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
New Jalpaiguri (NJP) to Yuksom (1,800 mts) 150 (8 hours Approx.)
Our journey begins with an early morning departure from the bustling railway station at New Jalpaiguri, leaving behind the heat and humidity of the plains as we ascend into the mystical landscapes of Sikkim. The eight-hour drive follows the Teesta River as it carves through increasingly dramatic gorges, with the vegetation changing from tropical forest to temperate pine as we gain elevation. We stop for lunch at a local restaurant in Jorethang. The final ascent to Yuksom takes us through beautiful cardamom plantations and traditional villages, with the Kangchenjunga range growing ever larger on the horizon. Upon arrival in Yuksom, we settle into our guesthouse and take an acclimatization walk. The evening is spent making final preparations for our trek while enjoying a hearty meal.
Day 2
Drive from Yuksom (1800 mts) to Melliaching (1800 mts) 20 km (2 hours) and Trek to Bhanjang (2500 mts )via Pangretar 7 to 8 km (6 to 7 hours)
We wake to our first morning in the mountains, enjoying breakfast with views of the surrounding peaks before driving to Melliaching. The two-hour journey follows rough mountain roads that offer glimpses of traditional Sikkimese village life, with colorful houses adorned with Buddhist symbols and terraced fields stepping down steep hillsides. At Melliaching, we meet our support team and begin our trek proper, climbing steadily through ancient forests of rhododendron and magnolia. The afternoon's climb to Bhanjang takes us through increasingly pristine forest, with the air growing cooler and the views expanding with every step. Upon reaching Bhanjang in the late afternoon, we set up our camp in a beautiful clearing surrounded by forest, with the sounds of the mountains providing a natural symphony as we enjoy our first camp dinner under the stars.
Day 3
Trek from Bhanjang (2500 mts )to Bajre Dara (3400 mts) 4 km (5 to 6 hours approx.)
Today's trek takes us to the spiritual and visual highlight of our journey - the Bajre Dara ridge. We begin after breakfast, climbing steadily through forests that transform with altitude, from dense rhododendron to stunted fir and juniper. The trail is steep in sections but rewards us with increasingly spectacular glimpses of the Kangchenjunga range through breaks in the trees. After approximately five to six hours of walking, we emerge from the tree line to the breathtaking panorama of Bajre Dara itself. The 360-degree view includes not just the massive faces of Kangchenjunga and its neighboring peaks, but also ranges stretching deep into Nepal and Bhutan. We set up camp on the ridge, giving us ample time to absorb the magnificent scenery as the afternoon light transforms the snow-clad peaks. As evening approaches, we witness one of the Himalayas' most magical shows - the sunset painting the mountains in shades of gold, pink, and purple. After a warm dinner, we might brave the cold for some stargazing.
Day 4
Trek from Bajre Dara (3400 mts)to Lamathang (2100 mts) 6 km (5 to 6 hours approx.)
We wake before dawn to witness the sunrise over Kangchenjunga, watching as the first rays of light strike the icy peaks and gradually illuminate the entire range. After this unforgettable experience and a substantial breakfast, we begin our descent to Lamathang. The trail follows a different route than our ascent, taking us through beautiful alpine meadows and past shepherd huts used by local herders. The landscape gradually transforms as we lose altitude, with the forests growing denser and the air becoming richer with oxygen. We stop for lunch beside a mountain stream, enjoying the peaceful sounds of flowing water and bird calls. The final descent to Lamathang brings us to a tranquil village nestled in a beautiful valley, where we set up our camp and have time to interact with local families and learn about their traditional way of life. The evening is spent reflecting on our mountain experiences around the campfire.
Day 5
Lamathang (2100 mts) to Khecheopalri Lake (2000 mts) 4 km (2 hours)and Drive Back to NJP 170 km ( 7 to 8 hours)
Our final day begins with a leisurely breakfast in Lamathang, followed by a gentle descent through beautiful forests to Khecheopalri Lake. This two-hour walk provides a perfect opportunity to reflect on our journey as we transition from the wilderness back toward civilization. Upon reaching Khecheopalri, we're immediately struck by the sacred atmosphere of this famous lake, considered one of Sikkim's most important pilgrimage sites. We spend time walking around the lake, visiting the nearby monasteries, and witnessing the remarkable phenomenon of birds removing leaves from the water's surface. After lunch at a local restaurant, we begin our drive back to New Jalpaiguri, a seven to eight hour journey that gradually returns us from the mountain world to the plains. As we travel, we carry with us not just photographs of spectacular landscapes, but memories of a journey that touched both our hearts and our souls - a trek that revealed the profound connections between mountains, forests, and the human spirit.
