Itinerary Description
The Beas Kund Trek is a classic Himalayan adventure that perfectly balances accessibility with breathtaking beauty. Named after the sacred glacial lake believed to be the meditation spot of Sage Vyasa, the author of the Mahabharata, this trek takes you to the very source of the Beas River that flows through Manali. What makes this journey special is its setting - you'll find yourself in a natural amphitheater surrounded by majestic 5,000-meter peaks including Hanuman Tibba, Friendship Peak, and the Seven Sisters. The trail winds through lush meadows carpeted with wildflowers, past babbling streams, and finally reveals an emerald lake cradled by towering mountains. This 3-day adventure is perfect for beginners and families while offering experienced trekkers a rewarding weekend escape into the Himalayas.
Best Time to Trek: The ideal window is from late-April to mid-November. May-June offers pleasant weather and blooming flowers, September-October provides crystal-clear skies and stunning autumn colors, while July-August brings lush greenery but also risk of rain and slippery trails. The trek is not recommended in winter (December-March) due to heavy snow and impassable trails.
Difficulty and Fitness: This trek is graded as easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners, families with older children (ages 8-60), and those with good basic fitness. The 32 km round trip with a maximum altitude of 3,890 meters requires reasonable cardiovascular health. Pre-trek preparation should include regular walking or jogging, stair climbing, and short practice hikes with a backpack.
Essential Permits: While no special trekking permit is required for Indian citizens, you must register at the forest check post in Dhundi and carry a valid government ID (Aadhaar, driving license, passport). We will handle any necessary forest entry fees and camping permits.
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS): Although Beas Kund's altitude is moderate (under 4,000 m), AMS can still affect sensitive individuals. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and dizziness. Prevention strategies include: ascend slowly, stay well-hydrated (2-4 liters daily), avoid alcohol, and inform your guide immediately if you feel unwell. The itinerary's gradual ascent with an overnight at Bakarthatch (3,150 m) provides natural acclimatization.
Food and Accommodation: On the trek, accommodation is in high-quality, twin-sharing mountaineering tents with sleeping bags and mats provided. All meals are included from Day 1 lunch through Day 3 breakfast - typically nutritious vegetarian food designed for high-altitude energy, with packed lunches on summit day. Most operators provide dining tents, kitchen equipment, and professional cooks.
Leave No Trace: This pristine environment depends on responsible trekking. Pack out all non-biodegradable waste, avoid using soaps in natural water sources, respect wildlife, and follow your guide's instructions regarding environmental practices.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1
Manali to Dhundi (Drive) & Trek to Bakarthatch
Your journey begins in the vibrant hill station of Manali. After an early breakfast and final gear checks, you'll board a waiting vehicle for the scenic drive to Dhundi. The route takes you through the famous Solang Valley, a hub of adventure sports where para-gliders dot the sky and the air buzzes with excitement. The road continues along the right bank of the Beas River, winding through dense forests of pine, walnut, and silver birch that gradually envelop you in their tranquil embrace.
Upon reaching Dhundi, a small settlement that serves as the last motorable point and the official start of your trek, you'll meet your trekking crew and complete any necessary formalities. Some trekkers report that a forest check post here requires registration, so keep your ID handy.
The trail from Dhundi to Bakarthatch is a gentle introduction to Himalayan trekking. You'll follow the river upstream, the path meandering through alpine meadows and alongside gurgling streams. To your left, the impressive Seven Sisters peaks rise majestically, their snow-capped ridges catching the afternoon light. As you gain altitude, the tree line gradually gives way to open grasslands, and you'll catch your first glimpses of the Bakarthatch meadows ahead. To the south, the magnificent Deo Tibba (6,001 m) and Indrasan (6,220 m) peaks come into view, their glaciers glistening in the distance.
Bakarthatch is a sprawling meadow that will be your home for the next two nights. The campsite offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and is often dotted with wildflowers during the summer months. As evening falls, your camp comes alive: tents are pitched, the kitchen team prepares a warm dinner, and fellow trekkers gather around to share stories and anticipation. The night skies here are legendary; with no light pollution, the Milky Way stretches across the heavens in breathtaking clarity. Overnight stay in tents at Bakarthatch.
Day 2
Bakarthatch to Beas Kund and Return
Today is the centerpiece of your adventure: the day you'll reach the sacred Beas Kund. An early start is essential, as the trek involves a steady ascent and you'll want ample time to soak in the magic of the destination. After breakfast, you'll set off with packed lunches, following the trail that continues upstream.
The path gradually steepens as you leave the meadows behind, entering a landscape of boulders and rocky moraine. Depending on the season, you may encounter patches of snow even in summer, adding a delightful challenge to the trek. The route offers ever-expanding views of the surrounding giants - Hanuman Tibba (5,990 m) dominates the western skyline, while Friendship Peak and Shitidhar stand guard to the north.
After approximately 2-3 hours of trekking, you'll cross a ridge and the emerald waters of Beas Kund come into view. The lake sits in a stunning natural amphitheater, cradled by towering peaks on three sides. On clear days, the water reflects the mountains so perfectly that it creates a mirror-like effect that photographers dream of. This is the source of the mighty Beas River - what begins as this serene glacial lake will eventually become the raging river that flows through Manali and beyond.
The area around the lake holds deep mythological significance. It is believed that Sage Vyasa, the compiler of the Mahabharata, used to bathe in these holy waters. Many trekkers feel a profound sense of peace here, a stillness that invites quiet contemplation. You'll have plenty of time to explore the area, take photographs, and enjoy your packed lunch with the most spectacular view imaginable.
The return journey to Bakarthatch follows the same route, but the perspective is entirely different. The landscape that challenged you on the way up now seems familiar and welcoming, and you'll notice details you missed in the morning's focused ascent. Arriving back at camp in the late afternoon, you'll have time to rest tired legs and relive the day's adventures before another delicious dinner under the stars. Overnight in tents at Bakarthatch.
Day 3
Bakarthatch to Dhundi & Drive to Manali
The final day of your trek is a leisurely descent back to civilization. After breakfast, you'll begin the gentle walk back to Dhundi. The trail retraces your steps from Day 1, offering a final opportunity to appreciate the beauty of the meadows and forests you traversed just days ago. The walk is easy and allows for reflection on the experiences of the past two days: the friendships formed, the challenges overcome, and the sacred lake that will remain in your memory forever.
After reaching Dhundi, your vehicle awaits. Before heading directly back to Manali, you may have the option to stop in Solang Valley for some adventure activities. Depending on your energy levels and interest, you can try paragliding, zorbing, or quad biking: a thrilling way to cap off your mountain adventure.
The short drive back to Manali brings you full circle, delivering you to the point from where you were picked up. As you say goodbye to your trekking crew and fellow adventurers, you'll carry with you not just photographs, but the profound sense of having visited one of the Himalayas' most special places: the source of a sacred river, cradled in the heart of the mountains. The Beas Kund trek may be short, but its magic lingers long after you've returned to the plains.
