About

Introduction The twin peaks - Kun and Nun - are the crowning glory of the Suru Valley in the Kargil district. Soaring at 7077 meters and 7135 meters, Kun and Nun are the highest peaks of the Zanskar Ranges. A 4-km-long snowy plateau separates the two peaks. Seasoned climbers from across the world who wish to climb Mt. Everest and other 8000-ers one day consider Kun a stepping stone in their mountaineering journey. The first summit happened in 1913. A second successful attempt by the Indian Army Expedition took 58 long years. Its intimidating structure, unnerving slopes, and forbidden landscapes will push your limits but don't let these challenges bridle your adventurous spirit. Best Time The climbing season is open for a limited period, from July to September. Difficulty Level Attempting to scale Mt. Kun is a serious business and an expedition reserved for experienced and bold climbers. After all, it is the second-highest peak in Zanskar. It requires specific knowledge of mountaineering equipment and adapting to such high altitudes and difficult terrain. You must have at least one summit of 6000 meters or above in your profile before you sign up for this daring adventure.

Foreign tourists and climbers are requested to arrive in Delhi a day prior. Attend a briefing session at the Indian Mountaineering Federation (IMF), where the Liaison officer (LO) will introduce himself. Stay overnight in Delhi.
Catch the early morning flight to Leh from New Delhi. Enjoy the majestic views of the Stok Kangri Ranges from your window. Check into your hotel room and spend the rest of the day at your leisure.
Spend the whole day in Leh to adapt your body to the change in altitude and air. Visit the Leh Palace and find moments of peace and clarity at the famous Leh monasteries. Get a whiff of the local culture at the markets. Make any last-minute purchases like climbing gear, woolens, etc.
Drive from Leh to Skiu, a small village, via Srinagar-Leh Highway. The austere scenery of Ladakh will keep you mesmerized throughout the drive. The confluence of the Indus and Zanskar Rivers is a sight to behold. We begin our trek along the Markha River. The trail is gentle, but the heat from the sun may slow you down. After a short lunch break, we continue walking to Sara, our campsite for the day. Stay overnight in a local homestay.
If you cherish long walks, you will love this day. The trail spans 11 km along the Markha village and is interrupted by river crossings. A ruined palace and a monastery adorn the humble landscape. Camp overnight.
As we progress further, the scenery becomes more dramatic and remarkable. The magnificent Kang Yatse (64996 m) keeps you motivated throughout the trail. Climb down the bridge to arrive at the open green pastures of Thachungste, our campsite for the day.
The trail to Nimaling welcomes you with a beautiful lake on the way. Take a moment to admire the magnificent reflection of Kang Yatse in the still waters of the lake. The campsite at Nimaling is beautiful and open. It gets cold and windy at night.
From Nimaling, it is a gradual ascent to Kongmaru La, the pinnacle of the Markha Valley trek. Until you reach the pass, you won't realize you've crossed an altitude of 5000 meters. Fluttering prayer flags adorn the lonely mountain pass. Kang Yatse and Dzo Jongo dominate the scenery. The downward journey from this point can be particularly challenging due to the steep descent. We hike to Chuskirmo, a small village from where we will drive to Leh.
Enjoy the scenic drive from Leh to Kargil as we pass through popular attractions and the magical confluence of the Indus and Zanskar. Stay overnight in a hotel.
Nun-Kun peaks make their first appearance as we cross the Suru River. Overnight camp in Shafat.
The hike traverses along the Shafat Nallah, crossing the beautiful meadows of Chashme. The trail progresses into the rocky moraines of Shafat Glacier. Stay overnight at Base Camp.
We will spend a day at the base camp giving ourselves sufficient time to acclimatize before we begin climbing.
We will set up three camps above the base camp; C1 (5300 m), C2 (6000 m), and C3 (6272 m). During this period, we will follow a strict acclimatization routine, have rotation days between the campsites, and have ample time to rest.
After the summit attempt, we head back to the base camp and hike down to Shafat Nallah. Stay overnight.
As it is a long 10?12-hour drive from Shafat to Leh, we will begin early in the morning. Overnight stay in a hotel.
Participants are requested to visit the IMF for a debriefing session.
