Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in Leh. Rest & Acclimatization.

As you step off the aircraft onto the tarmac of Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport, the first shock of Ladakhi winter hits you: the air at 3,500 meters is not just thin but piercingly cold, with temperatures often hovering around -10°C even during daytime hours. The drive to your hotel reveals a Leh transformed from its bustling summer self into a quiet, hibernating town where most shops and restaurants have closed for the season. After checking into a hotel with reliable heating; an absolute necessity for winter acclimatization, you spend the remainder of the day practicing the art of doing nothing. Movement is slow, deliberate, each breath consciously taken as your body begins the critical process of adapting to both altitude and extreme cold. The evening involves a simple meal and an early bedtime, with instructions to drink copious amounts of water despite the cold-induced lack of thirst, knowing that proper hydration is your first defense against altitude sickness.

Day 2

Acclimatization in Leh

Morning in winter Leh dawns with spectacular clarity, the sunlight brilliant but offering little warmth as temperatures may still read -15°C at 8 AM. Today's gentle acclimatization activities include visiting the Shanti Stupa for panoramic views of the snow-covered Leh Valley and exploring the Leh Palace when the sun is at its warmest around midday. The real purpose of these excursions is physiological: testing your layers, understanding how your body responds to exertion in cold, thin air, and learning to recognize the early signs of altitude discomfort. The afternoon includes a critical gear check with your guide, examining every piece of equipment from the rating of your sleeping bag to the quality of your gloves, knowing that in the coming days there will be no margin for error. The evening is spent reviewing winter safety protocols, particularly recognizing early symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia, and packing your duffel with the precise discipline that winter trekking demands.

Day 3

Drive from Leh to Rongdo (near Chilling) 65 km approx (2 hours Approx .) and trek to Labarpa 3 to 4 km approx.(2 hours trek )

After an early breakfast, we begin the drive to Rongdo, following the frozen Indus River through a landscape dramatically transformed by winter. The mountains wear thick snow mantles, and the river moves sluggishly beneath intricate ice patterns. At Rongdo, we meet our support team and begin our trek on the frozen river surface: an experience that immediately redefines your understanding of winter travel. The ice groans and cracks beneath your microspikes, creating sounds that echo through the silent valley. After approximately two hours of this surreal walking, we reach Labarpa, our first campsite, nestled in a natural amphitheater surrounded by ice-clad cliffs. Setting up camp becomes a lesson in winter survival; tents must be properly anchored against wind, sleeping pads must provide adequate insulation from the frozen ground, and all moisture must be meticulously kept out of the sleeping bags. The evening temperature plummets rapidly, and we gather for a hot meal before retreating to our tents, where the cold will test our gear and our resolve through the long night.

Day 4

Labarpa to Lazgoo (4 to 5 hours trek Approx.)

We wake to a world frozen in perfect stillness, the inside of the tent coated with frost from our breath. After a hot breakfast prepared by our cooks, who work miracles with stoves in sub-zero conditions, we begin our trek to Lazgoo. The trail climbs steadily away from the river, entering side valleys where the snow lies deep and untouched. In fresh snow, we may need to use snowshoes, which changes the rhythm of walking completely. The landscape opens into high-altitude meadows buried under meters of snow, with the trail becoming less defined and more about reading the natural lines of the land. The silence in these snow-bound valleys is absolute, broken only by the sound of our breathing and the rhythmic crunch of snow underfoot. After four to five hours of this meditative walking, we reach Lazgoo, where we establish camp with spectacular views of the surrounding peaks. The evening is spent huddled around a hot drink, sharing stories as the temperature drops and the stars emerge with breathtaking clarity in the pollution-free winter sky.

Day 5

Lazgoo to Sumda Chey (3 to 4 hours trek Approx.)

Today's trek takes us to Sumda Chey village, the cultural heart of our journey. The trail descends gradually into a sheltered valley, with the vegetation changing subtly as we lose altitude. The first sight of Sumda Chey appears like a mirage: a cluster of white-washed houses with smoke curling from chimneys, set against a backdrop of dramatic mountains. As we approach, we hear the sounds of village life: children playing in the snow, the bells of livestock, the distant rhythm of monastic drums. We're welcomed into the village with the traditional Ladakhi greeting of "Jullay" and settled into our accommodations, either in a village homestay or our winter camp. The afternoon is spent exploring the village, visiting the ancient monastery, and interacting with locals who maintain their traditional lifestyle even through the harsh winter months. The evening brings a welcome reprieve from camping, with the possibility of a heated room and a home-cooked meal, though the temperature still drops dramatically after sunset.

Day 6

Sumda Chey village to Sumda waterfall and ancient cave.

After the relative luxury of a night in the village, we embark on a day of exploration without heavy packs. Our first destination is Sumda Waterfall, which in winter transforms into a massive ice climb: a blue-white wall of frozen water that local ice climbers test their skills against. Even if we're not climbing, the sight is magical, with the suspended water creating natural ice sculptures that glitter in the sunlight. We then visit the ancient caves above the village, meditation chambers used by monks for centuries. The caves contain ancient murals and meditation platforms, with walls blackened by the smoke of countless butter lamps. Sitting in these caves, we can feel the weight of spiritual practice that has endured through generations of harsh Ladakhi winters. The afternoon is free for further exploration, photography, or simply absorbing the unique atmosphere of this remote village. As evening falls, we might be invited to share tea with village elders, hearing stories of Sumda Chey's history and legends.

Day 7

Sumda Chey to View Point 1 (4541 mts) and back. (4 to 5 hours trek Approx.)

Today presents the physical challenge of our trek—the ascent to View Point 1 at 4,541 meters. We start before sunrise, climbing steadily through snow-covered slopes as the first light touches the highest peaks. The winter snow makes the ascent more challenging but also more beautiful, with every step crunching through a pristine surface. As we climb, the views expand to reveal multiple valleys of the Zanskar range, all unified under their winter blanket. The final push to the viewpoint is steep but rewarding, with the summit offering a 360-degree panorama of snow-covered peaks stretching to the horizon. We spend time at the summit absorbing this magnificent vista, taking photographs, and enjoying a well-earned lunch with what must be one of the best views in Ladakh. The descent back to Sumda Chey follows our upward track, with the village appearing like a welcoming oasis as we approach. The evening is spent with a special meal and reflections on the journey so far.

Day 8

Sumda Chey to Rangdo, and visit Sumda Chun monastery, and back to Leh

Our final day in the mountains begins with a farewell to the villagers who have hosted us, exchanging contact information and promises to share photographs. We begin our trek out, following a different route than our approach to visit Sumda Chun monastery. This ancient gompa seems to grow organically from the mountain it's built upon, its white walls and red accents standing in dramatic contrast to the winter landscape. We receive a blessing from the resident monks before continuing our descent to Rongdo, where our vehicles await. The drive back to Leh feels like emerging from a dream: the landscape gradually changing from wilderness to civilization, with the comforts of heated buildings and running water awaiting us. Upon arrival in Leh, we check into our hotel and enjoy the simple luxury of a hot shower before gathering for a final celebration dinner, sharing stories and toasting to a successful winter adventure.

Day 9

Departure from Leh

The final morning allows for last-minute souvenir shopping in Leh's winter market, where shops open by request for the few winter visitors. We exchange contact information with our guide and support team, knowing that the bonds formed on a winter trek run particularly deep. The drive to the airport is quiet and reflective, the magnificent winter landscape of Ladakh unfolding one last time outside our windows. As we check-in for our flight, we carry with us not just photographs, but the memory of a world transformed by winter: the frozen rivers, the ice waterfalls, the ancient monasteries, and the profound silence of the Himalayas in their most elemental season.
