Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Drive Dharamshala (1450 mts) to Kareri Village (1800 mts) 25 km (2 hours) and Trek to Liyoti (2450 mts) 6 km (4 to 5 hours )

Our journey begins in Dharamshala after an early breakfast to make the most of the day ahead. The drive to Kareri Village covers only 25 kilometers but transports us through dramatically changing landscapes, from the bustling streets of McLeod Ganj with their Tibetan influence to the traditional Hindu villages of the lower valleys. The road winds through dense pine forests and past terraced fields, with the colossal wall of the Dhauladhar range growing ever more dominant with each passing kilometer. Upon reaching Kareri Village, we meet our support team and make final preparations before beginning our trek. The initial path follows a well-defined trail that climbs steadily beside the Nyund River, whose clear waters originate from the very glaciers we are heading toward. The forest envelops us immediately, with towering pines and occasional rhododendron trees creating a shaded canopy. After approximately three hours of walking, we reach a beautiful clearing perfect for a packed lunch, where we can rest our legs while listening to the river's constant murmur. The final stretch to Liyoti follows a slightly steeper path, with occasional openings in the trees offering previews of the dramatic landscapes to come. Arriving at Liyoti in the late afternoon, we find our camps already established in this idyllic location. The evening is spent settling into the rhythm of mountain life, before gathering for dinner under a spectacular canopy of stars.

Day 2

Trek To Kareri Lake (2950 mts) and Back To Liyoti ( 2450 mts) 14 km ( 7 to 8 hours both sides)

We wake to the sounds of the mountains coming to life, the rushing river, the morning birdsong, and the gentle stirring of our camp. After an early breakfast designed to fuel the day's efforts, we begin our ascent to Kareri Lake, carrying only daypacks with essential items. The trail climbs more steeply today, leaving the dense forest behind and entering the alpine zone where the views expand with every step. The Nyund River continues to accompany us, though now as a series of dramatic waterfalls and rapids rather than the gentle flow of the lower valleys. After approximately two hours of climbing, we reach a dramatic viewpoint where the full scale of the Dhauladhar range becomes visible for the first time, their snow-clad peaks forming a breathtaking backdrop to our journey. The final approach to the lake follows a series of switchbacks that build anticipation until we suddenly emerge at the shore of this stunning turquoise gem. Kareri Lake sits in a dramatic stone amphitheater, its waters perfectly mirroring the surrounding peaks when calm. We spend substantial time at the lake, eating our packed lunch while absorbing the magnificent scenery, exploring the shoreline with its ancient shepherd cairns and prayer flags, and for those with energy, making the short climb to the ridge above for even more panoramic views. The return journey to Liyoti follows the same path but offers new perspectives as we descend with the Dhauladhar range now spread before us. Arriving back at camp in the late afternoon, we have time to rest and reflect on the day's experiences before another nourishing camp dinner and a well-earned night's sleep.

Day 3

Liyoti (2450 mts) To Kareri Village (1800 mts) 6 km ( 3 to 4 hours) Drive Back To Dharamshala 25 km ( 2 hours )

Our final morning in the mountains begins at a more leisurely pace, with time to enjoy a last breakfast beside the river and perhaps take a short walk to imprint the beauty of Liyoti in our memories. We then begin our descent to Kareri Village, the downhill journey feeling significantly easier and faster than our ascent two days prior. The forest that provided welcome shade during our climb now feels like an old friend, with familiar landmarks signaling our progress. We notice details we might have missed during the ascent; particular wildflowers, interesting rock formations, and different vantage points of the valley below. Upon reaching Kareri Village, we bid farewell to our local support team and board our waiting vehicle for the return drive to Dharamshala. The transition from wilderness to civilization happens gradually, with the mountain views slowly receding in our rear-view mirror as we descend toward the Kangra Valley. Arriving in Dharamshala in the early afternoon, we have time for a final meal together, perhaps reflecting on how this relatively short journey has offered such a profound immersion into the natural and cultural wonders of the Dhauladhar range, creating memories that will last long after our boots have dried and our backpacks have been stored away.
