Itinerary Description

Grade: Challenging
Location: LADAKH
Maximum Altitude: 6250 mts
Duration: 11 Days

The Mentok Kangri II Expedition is a journey to one of Ladakh's most accessible 6,000-meter peaks, offering a perfect blend of high-altitude adventure and cultural immersion. Rising to 6,250 meters in the remote Rupshu valley, this peak derives its name from the wildflowers that bloom across the Changthang plateau during the brief summer season. Unlike the more technical climbs in the region, Mentok Kangri II is considered a "trekking peak" - a non-technical but physically demanding ascent that requires good endurance and proper acclimatization rather than advanced mountaineering skills. The expedition unfolds against the backdrop of the breathtaking Tso Moriri (‘Tso’ means ‘Lake’ in the local language), one of the world's highest brackish lakes, and offers intimate encounters with the nomadic Changpa herders who have inhabited these windswept landscapes for centuries with their pashmina goats and yaks.

Key Preparations and Practical Information
Best Time to Climb: The optimal window is from mid-June to late September. During these months, weather conditions are most stable, with clear skies and manageable temperatures. July and August offer the warmest conditions, while September provides crystal-clear views but colder nights.

Difficulty and Fitness Requirements: This expedition is graded as moderate for experienced trekkers but requires excellent physical conditioning. You'll need strong cardiovascular fitness and leg strength to handle sustained climbs at extreme altitude. A 2-3 month training plan incorporating running (10km in 60 minutes), stair climbing with a backpack, and strength training is recommended. Prior high-altitude trekking experience (above 5,000m) is highly beneficial.

Essential Permits: Foreign nationals require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) for this region, while Indian citizens need wildlife sanctuary permits. We will arrange all necessary permissions, including peak fees and environmental charges. Ensure your passport/ID has at least 6 months validity.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS): This is the most significant risk on any high-altitude expedition. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and loss of appetite. Our itinerary is designed with gradual ascent and multiple acclimatization days to minimize risk. Prevention strategies include: ascend slowly, stay extraordinarily well-hydrated (3-4 liters daily), avoid alcohol entirely, and never hide symptoms from your guide. Our team will carry pulse oximeter(s) to monitor oxygen saturation, and emergency oxygen may be available at Base Camp. Descending is the only definitive treatment for severe AMS.

Respect Local Culture: The Changthang plateau is home to the Changpa nomadic community with rich Buddhist traditions. Always ask permission before photographing people, dress modestly, and respect religious sites. The principle of "Leave No Trace" applies: pack out everything you bring in.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Leh (3500m)
Your adventure begins as your flight descends through the dramatic Ladakhi landscape, offering your first glimpses of stark, barren mountains that characterize this high-altitude desert. The day is deliberately left free for one purpose only: complete rest. At 3,500 meters, the air contains significantly less oxygen than you're accustomed to, and your body needs time to begin the acclimatization process. Resist the temptation to explore: lie down, drink plenty of water, and allow yourself to adjust. A gentle evening walk around the hotel premises is acceptable, but nothing more strenuous. Our expedition leader will conduct a brief orientation, checking on everyone's well-being and outlining the days ahead. Overnight stay in Leh.

Day 2

Rest and Acclimatization in Leh
Today continues the crucial process of acclimatization while offering a gentle introduction to Ladakh's rich cultural heritage. After a leisurely breakfast, you may take a short, gradual walk to visit some of Leh's iconic landmarks. The magnificent Leh Palace, a nine-story structure dating to the 17th century, stands as a testament to the region's royal history, while the gleaming white Shanti Stupa atop a nearby hill offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding mountains. This is also when Our expedition team will complete the necessary paperwork and permit formalities for the Mentok Kangri climb. The key principle today is "walk slowly, rest often" - every step should be unhurried. Listen to your body; if you feel any signs of altitude discomfort, return to the hotel and rest. Hydration remains paramount. In the evening, your guide will conduct a detailed expedition briefing, reviewing the itinerary, discussing safety protocols, and answering any questions. Overnight stay in Leh.

Day 3

Leh (3500m) to Karzok (4500m), 220km Drive
Today's journey is an epic drive across the dramatic landscapes of the Changthang plateau. You'll depart Leh early, heading southeast on a road that traverses some of the highest motorable passes in the world. The route crosses the formidable Tanglang La at 5,328 meters, the second-highest motorable pass in the world, where prayer flags flutter against an impossibly blue sky. The landscape transforms from the arid mountains around Leh to the vast, open expanses of the Rupshu valley, home to nomadic Changpa herders and their livestock. You'll pass the brackish Tso Kar Lake before finally descending towards the magnificent Tso Moriri. Arriving at the village of Karzok, perched on the northwestern shore of this stunning lake at 4,500 meters, you'll feel you've reached the edge of the world. Check into your camp or simple guesthouse and spend the evening absorbing the surreal beauty of turquoise waters against brown mountains. The altitude is significant - rest well and continue hydrating. Overnight stay at Karzok.

Day 4

Rest and Acclimatization at Karzok
Another essential acclimatization day, this time at the edge of one of the world's most beautiful high-altitude lakes. The morning light on Tso Moriri is magical, and you'll have time to walk slowly along its shores, watching the light shift across the water and the surrounding peaks. A visit to the 300-year-old Karzok Monastery, perched on a hill overlooking the lake, offers cultural immersion and gentle exercise. You may encounter young monks going about their daily routines and perhaps spot the rare black-necked cranes that frequent the area. The vast lake, stretching 28 kilometers in length, supports a rich ecosystem: you might see kiang (Tibetan wild asses), marmots, and numerous migratory birds. Today is about letting your body adjust to this altitude while your spirit soaks in the profound beauty of the Changthang. Your guide may lead a short, easy walk to help with acclimatization while emphasizing the importance of pacing. Overnight stay at Karzok.

Day 5

Karzok (4500m) to Karzok Phu (4600m), 2km trek (1.5-2 hour trek)
Today marks the official start of your trekking journey, though the distance is deliberately short to aid acclimatization. Leaving the shores of Tso Moriri behind, you'll follow a gentle trail that gradually ascends away from the lake. The terrain opens up into the characteristic high-altitude desert landscape of the region, with expansive views of the surrounding mountains. Karzok Phu is a beautiful campsite situated in a valley that will serve as your final acclimatization stop before pushing higher. The short day allows you to settle into camp routines, organize your gear, and continue adapting to the altitude with minimal physical stress. As evening falls, the scale of the landscape becomes even more apparent, with peaks catching the last light and the stars emerging in an impossibly clear sky. This is a time for team bonding, sharing expectations, and mental preparation for the challenges ahead. Overnight stay in tents at Karzok Phu.

Day 6

Karzok Phu (4600m) to Base Camp (5250m), 8km trek (5-7 hours)
This is a significant day of ascent as you finally approach the mountain that has been your goal. The trail from Karzok Phu gradually climbs through rocky terrain, with the landscape becoming increasingly dramatic as you gain elevation. You'll likely cross several small streams and navigate moraine fields as the Mentok Kangri massif reveals itself ahead. The gradient is steady but manageable, allowing for a sustainable pace. Upon reaching Base Camp at 5,250 meters, you'll be greeted by the stunning panorama of the Mentok Kangri peaks and, on clear days, the distant gleam of Tso Moriri far below. The camp is established on a relatively flat area, and you'll have time to settle in, hydrate thoroughly, and rest. The thin air at this altitude is immediately noticeable - every movement requires conscious effort. Your body is now truly in the high mountain environment. Overnight stay in tents at Base Camp.

Day 7

Training and Acclimatization at Base Camp
Today is one of the most important days of the entire expedition. At 5,250 meters, your body needs time to adjust before pushing higher, and this rest day is carefully designed for both acclimatization and preparation. After a relaxed morning, your guide will conduct a comprehensive training session on the use of technical climbing equipment. You'll practice putting on and adjusting crampons, handling your ice axe correctly, and moving efficiently on snow while roped up. This is not just about skill acquisition - it builds confidence and team cohesion. In the afternoon, you may undertake a short acclimatization hike to a nearby vantage point, gaining another 100-150 meters before returning to camp. This "climb high, sleep low" approach accelerates your body's adaptation to altitude. Throughout the day, your guide will monitor everyone's oxygen saturation and watch for any signs of altitude sickness. The evening briefing will cover tomorrow's summit plan in detail, including wake-up times, climbing protocols, and safety procedures. Overnight stay in tents at Base Camp.

Day 8

Base Camp (5250m) to Summit (6250m) and Return to Base Camp, 8-10km trek (10-14 hours)
This is the day everything has been building toward - the summit push. You'll wake extremely early, typically around 1:00 AM, to a pre-dawn breakfast and final preparations. Headlamps cutting through the darkness, you'll set off on the long ascent. The route initially follows the glacier, gradually steepening as you gain altitude. Crampons will be necessary from early on, and you'll move roped together with your teammates for safety. The climb is physically demanding: each step requires conscious effort in the thin air, and the altitude makes even simple movements exhausting. Your guide sets a careful pace, slow and rhythmic, conserving energy for the final push. As dawn breaks, the surrounding peaks emerge in spectacular fashion, and the turquoise waters of Tso Moriri become visible far below. The final section to the summit involves navigating snowy slopes with fixed ropes for security. Standing on top at 6,250 meters, the sense of achievement is overwhelming. The panoramic view encompasses the entire Changthang plateau, with Chamser Kangri, Lungser Kangri, and the distant peaks of Tibet visible on the horizon. After celebrating and capturing photos, you must begin the careful descent - statistically the most dangerous part of any climb due to fatigue. Return to Base Camp, where a warm tent and hot meal await. Overnight stay in tents at Base Camp.

Day 9

Base Camp (5250m) Back to Karzok Village (4500m), 8km trek (4-5 hours)
After the immense effort of summit day, today's descent is a welcome relief. You'll retrace your steps from Day 6, following the trail down from Base Camp towards Karzok Phu and eventually back to the village of Karzok on the shores of Tso Moriri. The descent allows for reflection on the incredible achievement of the past days. The landscape that felt so challenging on the way up now seems familiar, almost welcoming. As you lose altitude, the air becomes noticeably richer, and breathing becomes easier. Reaching Karzok feels like returning to civilization after the rarefied world of the high mountain. You'll check into your camp or guesthouse and enjoy the simple luxury of not having to set up a tent. The evening is for celebration, sharing stories with your teammates, and toasting to your success against the backdrop of the lake you've been viewing from above for days. Overnight stay at Karzok.

Day 10

Karzok (4500m) to Leh (3500m)
The final drive back to Leh follows the same spectacular route through the Changthang plateau, but the perspective has changed. You're no longer a visitor wondering what lies ahead - you're returning from the summit, carrying the quiet confidence of accomplishment. The drive offers a chance to see the landscape through different eyes, noticing details you might have missed on the way out. A stop at the Chumathang hot springs provides a welcome opportunity to soak tired muscles in the naturally warm, mineral-rich waters. Crossing Tanglang La again, you might pause to reflect on how different the world looks from over 6,000 meters. Arriving in Leh in the evening, you'll check into your hotel, enjoy a hot shower, and perhaps treat yourself to a celebratory dinner in town. The contrast between the simple life on the mountain and the amenities of Leh is striking. Overnight stay at Leh.

Day 11

Departure from Leh
After breakfast, you'll transfer to Leh airport for your flight back to Delhi and onward connections. As the plane lifts off and the Himalayas recede beneath you, you'll carry with you not just photographs, but the profound sense of having pushed your limits in one of the world's most beautiful and challenging environments. The Mentok Kangri II expedition is more than a climb: it's a journey into a landscape and culture that transforms all who experience it.
